The property, although extensive, lacked a spacious family kitchen area. The existing rooms were either large and formal or smaller service rooms. The brief was to create a cooking, eating and relaxing space for smaller gatherings which would also work for informal entertaining in bigger groups.
After looking at the property as a whole it became clear that extending the existing kitchen was the logical way forward.
The new space needed to sit comfortably with the existing property internally and externally. Extending the existing kitchen, originally built as a school room, repeating the arched French doors and designing a pitched roof gave it a feel of a traditional orangery lining the walled garden.
By maximising the ceiling height into the eaves the new space is given a high ceiling consistent with the existing property. Particular attention was paid to the materials, finishes and details to ensure that the extension blended in with existing features and finishes.
